Eavesdropping
Maker Whitney George · Work date 2026 · Medium telephone · Role work · Experienced by the compiler 2026-07-23
Description
"Eavesdropping is an interactive telephone installation and performance system built from private calls, recorded evidence, fictional archives, and the unstable intimacy of being overheard. A listener picks up a phone and enters a conversation already in motion: two voices trying to understand a room, a number, a set of objects, and the strange consequences of being connected. Part installation, part game, part haunted archive, Eavesdropping asks what happens when listening becomes participation — and when a private line starts behaving like a door." The visitor instruction on the maker's page is: "Pick up the phone. Stay quiet." Season 1 ran 12 July - 31 October 2026; a 24/7 dial-in line accompanies the gallery installation. Twenty episodes, six voiced characters, recorded.

Maker's own instruction is 'stay quiet' — the participant may remain wholly passive. This is the C10 break.
Anatomy
Thirteen criteria after Lauren R. Beck. Each carries a source grade: M maker-confirmed, P published, F first-hand, I inferred by the compiler, ? not yet established. Definitions are on the anatomy page.
- Participants listen through headphonesnoP
A phone is picked up, or a dial-in line called. No headphones.
- Participants move through space as part of the worknoI
The dial-in line requires no movement; the gallery version requires presence but not directed relocation.
- Audio technology is necessaryyesP
A telephone installation. The line is the work.
- Site-, situation- or language-specificOptionalI
The gallery installation is site-bound, but a 24/7 dial-in line makes the same work placeless. Specificity available, not required.
- Engages with the history of a sitenoI
The archives are fictional. No documented past of a real, identifiable place.
- Created for an urban environmentunknown?
Nothing in the maker's text establishes urban dependence either way.
Did you experience this? Tell us - Created as an artwork other than theateryesP
"An interactive telephone installation" — the maker frames it as installation art.
- Intended to be understood as theatersometimesI
"Performance system" is theatrical; "installation" and "haunted archive" are not. Your Figure 6 had 'Partly' here, which becomes s.
- Accidental real-world sights and sounds are importantyesM
The maker frames incidental listener presence as constitutive: breathing, hesitation and laughter "become part of the encounter."
- Spectator must participatenoM
"Pick up the phone. Stay quiet." The maker instructs passivity. THIS IS THE BREAK IN BECK'S UNIVERSAL CRITERION.
- Has live performers other than the participantsnoP
Twenty recorded episodes, six voiced characters. No one performs during the caller's session.
- Involves game playsometimesI
The maker says "part game," but no objective or resolution state is described. Downgrade to n if she confirms there is no win condition.
- Uses props other than the listening devicesometimesP
The gallery holds photographs, cassettes, letters and evidence boxes; the dial-in line has none. Varies by how it is encountered.
