Anything Can Be Said

A history and anatomy of phone theater

Work

Serveur Vocal Humain

Maker Julien Daillère  ·  Work date 2020  ·  Medium telephone  ·  Role work

Description

Daillère performs a synthetic voice himself, live, on his own mobile, navigating a branching script held as hyperlinks in a word-processing document. Advertised on social media as a genuine interactive voice response system built from recordings of his voice — a deliberate deception. He fakes error messages, truncates himself with the mute key, flattens pitch and tempo and loops "Merci de patienter…" in order to construct an illusion of non-life. His own sister navigated the whole tree without realising a human was performing. Later staged as a live radio version on Radio Galoche and as a remote audio tour of a gallery exhibition.
