The Archive
Maker Allen Otto · Work date 2026 · Medium telephone · Role work
Description
“The Archive is a living record of strangers. A bank of analog phones sits in a shared space, occasionally ringing on its own. If you pick one up you are given a choice to listen to something left behind or add your own confession, memory, musing, dream, or voice to the collection. Participation is never required or pressured, but for those who stay and listen widely, something begins to emerge across the phones. The piece exists through the people who encounter it: they are the authors.”

Presented at Voidspace Live 2026. Two things make this work unusually important to this archive. It is the only work here whose maker states in the copy that participation is never required — most works imply it, this one refuses it. And it is a forward pass in which every contributor consents and knows the contribution is for strangers, which is the distinction that retired the compiler's own booth project. Allen Otto was interviewed for this research; his contribution was that repeated permission can function as cover.
Anatomy
Thirteen criteria after Lauren R. Beck. Each carries a source grade: M maker-confirmed, P published, F first-hand, I inferred by the compiler, ? not yet established. Definitions are on the anatomy page.
- Participants listen through headphonesnoP
A bank of analog phones. Handsets, not headphones.
- Participants move through space as part of the worksometimesI
The phones sit in a shared space and listening widely is what makes the piece cohere, which implies moving between them — though the copy does not require it.
- Audio technology is necessaryyesP
Voices on phone lines are the entire work.
- Site-, situation- or language-specificSituationI
Requires its own installation — a shared room and a bank of phones — rather than a named place.
- Engages with the history of a sitenoI
No documented past of a real place.
- Created for an urban environmentnoI
No urban dependence.
- Created as an artwork other than theateryesI
An installation and a participatory sound archive as much as a performance; the copy's framing is authorship, not spectatorship.
- Intended to be understood as theateryesI
Programmed in an immersive performance strand at Voidspace Live.
- Accidental real-world sights and sounds are importantunknown?
A shared space with phones ringing on their own suggests the room's own life matters, but the copy does not say so.
Did you experience this? Tell us - Spectator must participatenoM
The maker's own words: “Participation is never required or pressured.” The clearest statement of non-required participation anywhere in this archive.
- Has live performers other than the participantsnoP
Recorded voices left by earlier participants. Nobody performs during an encounter.
- Involves game playnoI
No rules, objective or resolution state. Listening widely is rewarded, not scored.
- Uses props other than the listening devicenoI
The handset is the listening device; nothing else is handled.
