Why the work appears here
The opening instruction is to pick up the phone and stay quiet. A private conversation is already underway; the listener was not invited and the system makes room for them anyway. The published description names the transaction exactly — entering intimacy without consent, becoming a witness before anyone has agreed to be witnessed. That is the ethical structure I had built into The One Who Answers as a byproduct, and which this work takes as its subject. See Finding 05.
The archive is made by the participants
Season 1 runs a fifteen-day structure in which two participants receive evidence boxes, prompts and private instructions, deliberately asymmetrical — each holds objects and information the other does not. Their recorded calls, voicemails and audio notes become the installation. Performance and documentation are not separate layers, which is the condition this research arrived at by accident rather than design.
What I heard
I called the 24/7 line on 23 July at 4:44 PM and stayed on for 23 minutes. Episode 01 runs 23 minutes, so I heard it whole. It is titled I Am Sitting in a Room — after Alvin Lucier’s 1969 work, in which a voice recorded in a room and re-recorded through its own playback gradually dissolves until only the room’s resonance remains. A recording that erases the speaker and keeps the space. I have no memory of the call.
